The Art of Nihon Shishu

Japanese Embroidery

Melbourne Fashion Designer, Jody Kahlon is influenced by and frequently uses traditional Japanese silks in her works. This has opened my eyes to the appreciation of culture in design.

Nihon Shishu is a traditional Japanese embroidery technique dating back to the Kofun Period, more than 1,600 years ago. The technique was traditionally used to decorate garments worn by the wealthy during religious or spiritual ceremonies.

This gown was created with appreciation of traditional fabrics in mind, honouring the delicacy and intricacy of the Japanese kimono silk embroidery.

The design uses precise fabric placement, and high quality, precision techniques to enhance my client's figure in an elegant feminine style.

The gown was my first design made to fit, using couture processes and techniques. I aim to further establish these qualities throughout my future work.
